Touching Masterpieces — The world's first Virtual Reality experience for the blind. Not with a headset, but with a pair of gloves.
NeuroDigital, a tech startup from the south of Spain, demonstrated the amazing potential of Virtual Reality haptics in a unique new way. The focus of Virtual Reality haptics development around the globe has mostly been in military or gaming sectors, and it has been only prototyped to enhance the Visual Virtual Reality experience.
So, for the first time, NeuroDigital based the whole experience solely on touch, addressing the people for whom the sense of touch is the key medium to perceive the world: the blind and visually impaired. And with 'Touching Masterpieces', NeuroDigital created the first Virtual Reality experience for the blind - not with a headset, but with a pair of gloves.
172 countries reached and 544 million impressions — with zero media budget.
Launched at the National Gallery in Prague, 'Touching Masterpieces' gave the blind audience a remarkable experience - to 'see', through Virtual Touch, iconic sculptural masterpieces they have never seen, or touched before. This intimate encounter with visual arts opened up a new era of digital accessibility for blind and visually impaired people. And the impact of 'Touching Masterpieces' has started a debate amongst the public and tech leaders globally about how much more Virtual Reality and technology can offer humanity.
